Overwatch Hero Meta Report: Console (Oct 27, 2017)
You can smell it in the air, something cool and crisp. It may be fall, it may be nearly Halloween - but for Overwatch fans it is nearly Blizzcon! Lots of announcements, including a new hero is expected within the next week - and I for one am excited. It will be my first Blizzcon, and I have been busy preparing for the trip as Season 6 comes to a close. Console has been seeing slow changes in the meta as the season ends - with Mercy fully taking over in the new meta. Other smaller changes are also happening, such as McCree's popularity increase and Roadhog coming back into the meta. Today is the final day of the Season - hope you all met your goals! - Switch
Mercy's popularity has continue to grow after her rework in Patch 1.15. After seeing a big jump in popularity at the highest tiers, that popularity is now reaching the lower tiers as well. In Gold and above, Mercy is being played in 80% of all games. Note that Patch 1.16, which reduced her ability to Resurrect during Valkyrie and reduced her Guardian Angel mobility, has had little effect on Mercy's bottom line.
Supports in general a mixed bag. Lucio has fallen greatly across most tiers - even the pros have found less use for him in the new Mercy meta. Still, he is being played at a very high rate, though about the same as Zenyatta. Symmetra is seeing a popularity increase at the lower tiers, while Ana continues to fall - both are niche picks and generally not a big part of the meta.
Tanks remain . D.Va's popularity has generally gone down, but she is still the most popular Tank at tiers Bronze -> Platinum Tiers. The Patch 1.15 rework changed her role, as previously she was played as a main tank. With the nerf to Defense matrix and addition of Micro Missles, D.Va is now being played more like an off-tank. At high tiers, Zarya is still the top pick, being played in almost 50% of games. Main tank Reinhardt is seeing consistent play across the board and Orisa is seeing very heavy play at the lowest tiers. The shield battle is definitely a real part of the meta game, especially with Junkrat being played heavily. Roadhog also continues to grow in popularity after his Patch 1.14 buffs, up another 4% on average across all tiers. While he hasn't returned to his old form, he still is quite useful in the meta.
DPS heroes, the major trend is increasing popularity of McCree across the board - as Soldier is falling. McCree's kit has more burst than Soldier's, with Primary fire, Secondary fire (coupled with Flashbang), and Deadeye making it easier for him in many to kill Mercy and other heroes. Also of note is that Junkrat is still the most popular DPS at lower tiers - his Winrate is consistently in the top 5 among meta heroes. Needless to say, Junkrat's rise has been one of the biggest stories of Season 6.
Big Movers this Meta Report
The biggest usage gainers in the past two weeks are fairly consistent across the tiers. The last Console meta report noticed an uptick in Mercy play in the higher tiers - Mercy popularity has also trickled down into the lower tiers - a nod to the rework. With more Mercy has come more McCree, who is one of the most popular DPS heroes at higher tiers. His ability to deal burst damage and deal with the new Mercy
using Deadeye is likely a big part of that gain. Finally, Genji is up pretty big in the higher tiers (4% avg) and Roadhog up about 4% on average across the tiers.
The infographic above presents the biggest losers the past two weeks. A major trend is that Lucio has been declining pretty rapidly, he's down
again by 8% on average - players now only see him in roughly 1/3 games. It
may very well be the case that those Lucio players are choosing the new and powerful Mercy
instead. Despite the Patch 1.15 changes which buffed her damage, D.Va is falling consistently across most
tiers of play - she is down 3% on average. Winston' popularity has continued to decline as dive compositions aren't as popular anymore. Finally, Soldier is continuing the trend of
falling - he used to be the consensus #1 DPS pick, but no more. He
competes directly with McCree, Genji at Diamond - Grandmaster.
